3 Things I Learned: Full Time RV Living as a Single Mom
Hello there friend.
I have been drawn to simple intentional living for years. I remember being the person who watched endless youtube videos on vanlife, tiny houses and full time RV living (and if you’re here reading this, odds are you’re that person too). The ease and flow of daily tasks drew me in. The time spent together with kiddos, and the focus on experiences rather than purchasing and maintaining more possessions spoke to me.
After taking the leap nearly two years ago to move to Florida and dive fully into unschooling, full time RV living became the next logical step. Now after spending nearly 4 months in our RV full time, plus one month in our campervan Alma, I have the experience to share with you all! I am by no means a pro on the RV lifestyle, but I am learning more each and every day.
Now without any further ado, let’s get into the 5 Things I learned Doing RV Life Full Time as a Single Mom!
1) Everything is figure-out-able!
I bought my first campervan in March of 2023, and I knew very little about RVs as a whole. I had experience with a skoolie (converted school bus) but self-builds are quite different than an RV. The van taught me the basics about eletricity, the limitations of how much can be plugged in at any one time, and how much space we really need. However, when I made the purchase of our 44 Foot Class A, I had no idea what I was getting into!
We used a composting method in the campervan, so the toilet on the new large RV was a SUPER educational experience. The beauty of this lifestyle being so popular is the absolute plethora of information available online. The university of Youtube has taught me SO much about this rig. Although I was incredibly intimidated at first, luckily I live in an area with so many people who are familiar with this lifestyle. New friends and people willing to chip in and help have been a total life saver. The beauty about this lifestyle is the community of people who have been there done that, and they WANT to help!
With every situation that has popped up, (trust me, there have been many!) they have all been able to be figured out with time, patience and a quick search on Facebook groups or Youtube. This has boosted my confidence in my ability to resource the minds or tools to figure out nearly any problem. Truly, everything is able to be figured out!
2) There are more of us out there than you’d think.
As mentioned above, I went into this with YEARS of watching others jump onto the trend of simple and intentional living. I watched young single women, men and families live this lifestyle. But the reality is, the people I was surrounding myself with were not living this lifestyle. Moving to Florida was a major eye opener and shifted my mindset drastically. There are full length converted school buses, short school buses, converted vans, campervans, Rvs, and even converted mini vans ALL over the area we live in. This daily reminder that there are thousands of us in this small town alone, reminds me of how many of us are out there living this lifestyle every single day.
Surrounding yourself with other’s who are living this lifestyle I believe is KEY to making this sustainable for you and your family.
3) We could go smaller if we wanted to.
We began the summer with an overseas trip to Mexico, and returned to the states to spend the summer traveling in Alma, our class B campervan. This crash course in living tiny gave us a baseline of what worked for us and how much space we truly needed. After the month in the campervan, I stumbled on our current RV on Facebook marketplace and we fell in love. This RV was a 44 foot Class A RV. I was excited to be able to take all of our additional belongings out of storage and have a full sized kitchen to cook in.
We renovated the back room to be a Mario themed playroom/bedroom for little man. The extra space is truly wonderful, and I don’t regret moving into the larger rig. The amount of storage is still mindblowing to me, and we were able to bring literally every single toy little guy had in our two bedroom apartment previously.
However… we could go smaller.
Even in our apartment we spent a majority of our time in the living room. We typically keep craft supplies within arms reach and little dude likes to be cuddled up next to me while I am working on my classes for University or work on the business. Many of our unschooling activities happen naturally as we live our life or often outside. I have found I most enjoy the larger kitchen space! We could definitly do a class C and choose to discard a few more posessions. I hope this was a helpful insight into my experience so far Doing RV Life Full Time as a Single Mom.
