Top 3 Favorite Homeschool Activities

Hello there friend.

Homeschooling was a mission of mine from day 1. I knew that I wanted to have the unique experience of watching little dude learn and grow at home. Homeschooling, or unschooling, allows us to create a unique learning plan that fits our unique needs, interests and schedule. Working from home, living full time in the Rv full time, and unschooling has opened up the flexibility and freedom to allow kiddo to thrive.

Above all else our goal with homeschooling is to create a foundation of emotional awareness, kindness, and a strong sense of self. We have utilized varying resources including Kahn Academy Kids, ABC Mouse and countless trips to the local library to build up strong reading skillsets. So much of the remaining education gets to happen through life skills and every day intentional activities to bring education into LIVING. I could go on and on about this lifestyle and how beautiful education through living can be, but that will be for another blog post.

Now, let’s get to the activities!

1) Tie Dye

This is truly one of my aboslute favorite activities. Not only do you get to get HANDS ON with your kiddo, but you create a wearable creation for potentially years to come. Little man loves for us to wear our tye dye on the same day, and is truly in LOVE with his creation. This is one of the activities he talks about routinely, and he’s always down for another session!

How we do this project:

1) Our favorite method is to look through our closet for any white or light shirts/pants/shorts we already have. BONUS if these shirts have stains on them already!

PS: for one of our co-op events we bought THIS tye dye set that has lasted us over a year, and we STILL have lots of dye left over. This kit is our favorite because it comes with such a variety of colors, rubber bands, and even gloves! The container it comes in is great, and we actually store this messy kit outside and grab and go when we are ready for another project.

2) We get OUTSIDE because this lesson is messy! We outdoor tables that are always outside the RV and this serves as our workspace. We always plan on having messy hands and clothes. My approach is fun over perfection, and the messiness just makes it more fun!

3) After we tie our shirts/shorts/pants and apply the color, we put our masterpieces in ziplock bags for a minimum of 48 hours to give the dye time to do its thang!

4) Two days later, and after little man asks 2,875 times about his tie dye, we rinse the shirts until the water runs clear. Personally I let these shirts dry outside in the Florida sun. We use THIS drying rack for our tie dye and our clothes in general.

2) Scavenger Hunts

Scavenger hunts give your kiddos an opportunity to run around a use their imagination while reading AND writing. So many opportunities! This is a fan favorite from little dude. This can be done either inside or outside, but we typically take this OUTSIDE for extra fun. This one is easy peasy, and you literally just need a peice of paper, pencil and your imagination! ;)

BONUS if you have some fun props like binoculars, a magnifying glass, or other fun adventurer gear!

How we do this activity:

1) We begin my setting up outside. I get a piece of paper and pencil and ask little man what he would like on his list. Sometimes he would like to choose what he finds, in this case I encourage him to write out the list. Other times he would like to be surpirsed by what I put on the list.

2) Time to find the items on the list! Get your adventurer cap on and check off the items on the list! We typically end up doing a few hunts.

3) We usually find items that are natural such as pinecones, sticks, flowers and leaves. We use these finds for a natural craft activity after the hunts are over!

3)Nature Walks

Does this count as an activty? I think so!

We routinely take long walks and trips to the ocean. The opportunity to see and examine nature leads to incredible conversations, observations and memories that last a lifetime.

During these trips we focus on moving our bodies, creative play, and using our imagination. See that seagull over there? Let’s give him a name! What kind of bird would you be if you had to choose? I wonder how high seagulls can fly? How many hours a day do seagulls fly?

These tips usually end with us watching a documentary about a topic we chat about on our walks OR lots of googling and even further discussion.

Below you can see some of our incredible finds of washed up jelly fish, which led to incredible insights on what types of jellies live in our area, how long our jiggly friends live on average, and WHY these guys end up washed up so often on our beaches.

With some creativity nearly every activity for homeschooling can be created with nearly zero cost out of pocket. We have chosen to invest in a few solid areas of interest, including craft supplies and electronics. But truly, education and learning happens with daily living.

I will be posting soon about daily activities you might not realize are educational!

Are you homeschooling or considering it?
